Twitter can be a great tool, but it can also be a double-edged sword and come back to bite you in the ass if you use it improperly. Perhaps no one has learned that lesson better this year than Tesla CEO, Elon Musk. This year Musk has treated us to a barrage of tweets ranging from personal insults and attacks on the media to full-blown meltdowns. Here are a few of his greatest hits:
5) Questioning “Who *owns* the press?”
After a reporter for NBC News pointed out that an article praised by Musk was actually written by a cult that was indicted for abusing women, Musk hopped on to debate him in the replies. After several tweets back and forth in which he accused the reporter of living in a “bubble of self-righteous sanctimony,” Musk ended by boldly asking, “Who do you think *owns* the press? Hello” to which the reporter simply replied, “Uhhh Elon where are you going with this?”
4) Calling a rescue diver “Pedo guy”
Back in July during the mission to rescue a team of schoolboys who had been trapped inside a cave in Thailand, Musk proposed the use of a lofty new submarine technology that he had been working on. However, prof. Zeynep Tufekci, soon took to Twitter to post a thread about how unhelpful Musk’s proposal would be. Upon learning that his technology would not be used, Musk lashed out at one of the cave divers doing the actual rescuing in an unhinged rant and accused him of pedophilia without a shred of evidence. He later doubled down on his comments, betting someone a “signed dollar” it was true.
3) Attacking the Media
The Model 3 for Tesla was a PR nightmare. “When it comes to Tesla, the facts are not on Musk’s side” wrote Brent Goldfarb in an article for Vox. Tesla’s inability to deliver on its bold promises regarding production on the Model 3 spawned a flurry of reports on Tesla, which Musk in response, lashed out in a Trump-esque Twitter tirade against the media. In a response to a few negative articles from Reveal, Musk tweeted dismissed the outlet as “some rich kids in Berkeley who took their political science prof too seriously.”
2) That time Don Jr. Quote-Tweeted him
After a number of people in the media responded to his attacks on the media suggesting that his sentiments were helping Trump in his crusade against the press, Musk doubled down. In response to a transportation reporter at Verge, Musk irately wrote, “Anytime anyone criticizes the media, the media shrieks “You’re just like Trump!” Why do you think he got elected in the first place? Because no ones [sic] believes you anymore.” Thinking he had shaken off the Trump comparisons, Musk was then quote-tweeted by none other than Donald Trump Jr. who took Musk’s tweet and simply replied, “This…so true!”
1) When his Tweet tanked his company’s stock 6%
Last month on August 7th, Musk tweeted that he was considering taking his company private, later saying he had secured the necessary funding to do so. Yet after many grew skeptical of the claim, and after a Bloomberg report on an SEC probe into Tesla was released including a probe into the legality of Musk’s tweet, Tesla stock tanked 6% just two days later, erasing all the gains spurred by the original tweet.
Either Musk is steadily becoming more unhinged by the day, or he’s just practicing his best Donald Trump in preparation of running for office.
