It used to be the Golden Globes, voted on by 90 or so foreign journalists, indicated who would win the Oscar. Then it was the SAG awards, comprised of fellow actors who go on to be the largest branch of the Academy. With the Globes doing their own thing, sometimes neither of their best picture winners match Academy Awards winner and SAG merging with AFTRA (radio DJ’s, anyone who has done anything on television), those two awards bodies are no longer the faithful tealeaves. The Critics Choice Awards are comprised of 300 or so broadcast (radio or television) film critics around the country. In 2018 their winners matched identically with that of the Academy Awards. From the acting races, picture, and all the technical awards, Critics Choice and Oscars were in sync.

If you get a nomination from Critics Choice, you are likely getting it from the Oscars. The biggest difference is that The Critics Choice Awards allow a full 10 nominees for best picture (not a sliding scale like the Oscars) and they have no problem listing seven nominees in the acting categories as they have again this year. Full disclosure, I am a member of the BFCA and a critics choice voter. The voting body will vote on the winners Thursday, January 10th, only 48 hours before the envelopes are opened Sunday, January 13th and the frontrunners in this year’s race are solidified.

The Favourite leads the pack with a whopping 14 nominations, all the big ones, plus stuff like best comedy and best actress in a comedy. The Favourite didn’t do as well as expected with the Golden Globes this past weekend; only Olivia Coleman emerged as victor taking home best actress in a comedy. Black Panther has 12 nominations, including one for best action movie. First Man landed ten nods, including best picture where it’s been snubbed at other award shows, the critics here really embraced the technical and emotional film that’s struggled to take flight despite it arguably being one of the years best.

So who wins? Last year seemed like a year without a frontrunner until The Shape of Water took both director and picture at Critics Choice Awards which repeated at the Oscars. Who won at the Golden Globes this past Sunday will certainly affect who the critics vote for this week, they will either embrace those choices or reject them and make sure the correct winner in their mind is put forth. While I can’t reveal who I am voting for, here are how I think things go down on Sunday after checking out fellow members top ten lists and doing some small straw polls. The star-studded Critics’ Choice Awards will be broadcast live on The CW Network on Sunday, January 13th, from 7 – 10 p.m. ET (delayed PT).
