On September 6, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk guest appeared on comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast, called the Joe Rogan Experience (JRE). During the interview, the 47-year old billionaire who we all love-to-hate yet hate-to-love addressed several controversial topics while indulging in whiskey and marijuana with the JRE host. The morning after the podcast, the shares plummeted down nine percent, wiping off $4.3 billion of the company’s value.

Adding insult to injury, Tesla’s Chief Accounting Officer, Dave Morton, announced his resignation hours after the show and only after eight months on the job. Additionally, Friday was the last day for the company’s Vice President of operation, Sarah O’Brien and its head of Human Resources, Gabrielle Toledano.

Was it something he said?

During the two-and-a-half hour podcast, Musk talked about a wide variety of topics. The self-proclaimed ‘business magnet’ spoke on his struggles of keeping Tesla alive, a new project to fix LA traffic, the Chinese government spying on US citizens via smartphones and his belief that there is an extreme possibility that we are in a simulation.

It’s still extremely vague as to why the company’s Chief Accounting Officer, impulsively handed in his resignation, in the middle of the night, just hours after the show. The only thing we know is what has been released in his resignation filing. “Since I joined Tesla on August 6, the level of public attention placed on the company, as well as the pace within the company, have exceeded my expectations,” Morton said in his filing. “As a result, this caused me to reconsider my future. I want to be clear that I believe strongly in Tesla, its mission and its future prospects, and I have no disagreements with Tesla’s leadership or its financial reporting.”

The podcast is definitely worth a listen.

Rogan gets Musk to open up about his thoughts on AI. “Best case scenario, we effectively merge with AI.” Like cyborgs? According to Musk, we are already cyborgs, Musk believes the phones in our palms have become an extension of us.

Musk: “You’re already a cyborg, and most people don’t even realize. That phone [in your hand] is an extension of yourself.”

He also took the time to alleviate some rattled minds. Musk noted that the Chinese government doesn’t care about what kind of porn you watch.

“If you have, like, top secret stuff, you wanna be careful with what hardware you use, but most people don’t have top secret stuff. Nobody really cares what porn you watch! Nobody really cares. National spy agencies do not give a rat’s a** what porn you watch, they do not care” Musk stressed.

Maybe people found the interview unsettling as Musk bounced back and forth between serious and intellect answers to lightheartedly responding to answer we all want to know. The billionaire also joked with Rogan that the reason why he is able to come up with inventions such as Tesla and roof-tiles with built-in solar cells is that he is ‘an alien’. This isn’t the first time the billionaire’s antics have ended up in the press, and certainly won’t be the last.

One of the most candid moments came at the end when Elon reminded us that “it’s easy to demonize people; you’re usually wrong about it. People are nicer than you think. Give people more credit.” Maybe his investors should listen.
